Class War issue 80: Grub's Up!

Dear Class War,

I've just finished reading issue 79 and I must admit it just gets better, enjoyed the new sports section. I am interested in Class War's connection with animal rights and wonder if veganism is a part of your aims and beliefs?

It is with concern to Anthony's letter (CW Issue 79) that I am writing to fellow comrades and readers. I think all Anarchists should be involved in non-human species liberation by being active in support and refusing to eat their flesh! We humans have a sort of tyranny over non-humans/animals a like. Do meat eaters realise their attitudes to other members of other species is a form of prejudice no less objectionable than prejudice of a persons race or sex. Why do many anarchists refuse to extend the basic principle of equality of consideration to members of other species?

Considering all the facts of meat-eating - environmental disaster through deforestation, methane gas in the atmosphere, the waste of millions of tons of grain for meat and by-products etc. Humans have the choice to either eat or not eat meat. The animals inhumanely reared and slaughtered for consumption to create profits for capitalists do not have that choice. Animal liberation is human liberation and it's about time more anarchists realised this.

CW Reply: Class War has no political affinity with the animal rights/liberation movement. This does not mean we condone the maltreatment of animals, for starters such behaviour brutalises and dehumanises human society.

Class War is concerned with the social relations of human society and in no significant way can animals be considered part of human society - this is not prejudice but fact. The environmental damage caused by meat consumption is because of capitalism (as opposed to a sane economic policy) rather than our carnivorous habits. Many members of Class War are vegetarians or vegans, many are meat eaters. It is a personal matter for themselves.
