Class War issue 80: All Power To Your Imagination

Dear Class War,

A short note to say I enjoyed Dave Douglass' book "All Power To The Imagination" As a trade union member it is rare to see anyone making the case for unions other than the insurance case i.e. "join in case something happens to you". That is true, bad things happen to people while at work, but it has its limitations. People also join unions just prior to strike action which is interesting also.

Your experience as a miner is interesting and important. As an ex print worker and ex telephone engineer I know only to well the value of "the union". Yet unions do have very strong weaknesses. My experience in SOGAT and more extensively in the POEU/NCU/CWU were in the main good, especially at workplace and branch level, although the move towards big general unions is not in my view a good thing.

These days I am a member of UNISON, which even at branch level is so bureaucratic and remote from the workplaces that I wonder how it can be turned round. I would prefer unions for industrial sectors, health, education, local authorities etc,

Yours fraternally,
Louis, Wembley
