Class War issue 80: Chronic Bronchitis: The FEV Test

Dear Class War,

Dave Douglass (Class War issue 79, pages 10-11) gave a true and accurate account of the injustice done to miners and their families. It is as though their fight wants sweeping under the carpet if the government lingers on they will all be dead. Keep hesitating, put the people off, don't give them anything. No respect, no dignity leave them on a drip choking.

I agree with you that the FEV test is crude - if even given. In my fathers case the first reading was inadequate and the second not given at all so how do they conclude their findings? The test is supposed to test the miner's lung capacity against average non-miners of equal weight and size - no one weighed or measured my father. He was 84 years old when he passed away I knew they were doing their very best to make sure my dad died before another attempt at an inadequate FEV test. Dad always said doctors bury their mistakes.

CW Reply: The article on Chronic Bronchitis and the government's response to it was one of the most important we have run in Class War. We did not expect the response we received to it. We would urge as many people as possible who are concerned about their claim or that of a relative to contact the Mining Community Advice Centre on 01302 841 365. A website has now been set up which can be viewed at www.minersadvice.co.uk.
