Demo held at Walthamstow Stadium
Wathamstow Greyhound Stadium was the venue for a demonstration on Saturday, 18 May, as part of the national Greyhound Week of Action.
Some twenty-five or thirty protesters turned up and, for the first time ever, there were no police whatsoever! In any case, though, the demonstration was very peaceful.
The demo was unmissable thanks to the very effective banners that were held up throughout. Hundreds of leaflets were given out, and a fair amount of interest was shown by the punters. In fact several people turned away after reading the leaflet. Many cars stopped and took leaflets, and cars in the nearby Sainsbury's car park were also leafleted.
The local press came out to see what was going on. There had already been some coverage prior to the demo, and those in the Walthamstow area will keep a close eye on the local media to see what kind of line they will take, and any letters from greyhound-racing fans will be swiftly rebutted. The campaigners also appeared on BBC Radio London on the Saturday, albeit very early in the morning, and it went very well. Geoffrey Thomas, the chief executive of the British Greyhound Association also appeared on the programme although, apparently, he subsequently did not turn up to another talk show, merely giving a statement instead - perhaps because he knows we are winning the argument.
As the campaign against greyhound racing continues to gather momentum, it is apparent that we need to protest at the other London sites too - Ilford, Romford, Wimbledon and Catford. These other sites are getting away scot-free at the moment, so we shall need to have a presence there, too, before long.
